XM Satellite Radio
XM Satellite Radio is now part of the Sirius XM Radio Group. Sirius now operates two satellite radio services – the main Sirius section and the subsidiary XM service. XM Satellite Radio is a pay-for-service operator and offers 73 types of music channels which are totally commercial-free. It also offers 39 news, sports, talk and entertainment channel besides 21 region channels for traffic and weather news. Then, XM Satellite Radio also airs 23 play-by-play sports channels which are all a huge hit.
XM was set up in 1988 after the incorporation of the American Mobile Satellite Corporation (AMSC) which is a consortium mainly concerned with satellite broadcasting of telephone, fax and data signals. The AMSC set up the American Mobile Radio Corporation in 1992 and focused on developing a satellite-based digital radio service which laid the groundwork for the XM Satellite Radio Holding Inc to be eventually set up in 1999. XM Satellite Radio was officially launched in 2001.
XM merged with its former rival Sirius Satellite Radio in 2008. Thereafter, Sirius and XM broadcasts became a new line-up of combined content. XM used to be the biggest satellite radio company in America before the merger took place.

Initially, XM Radio Online was included in the main subscription but now it can be availed of separately for US$7.99 a month. The XM Satellite Radio has upgraded its online audio streaming capacities to stereo CD-quality sound. There have been several changes in the subscription packages too.
XM Satellite Radio's data services relating to weather information is conducted via the XM WX Satellite Weather Datacasting Service which is updated every minute and most pilots use it with weather receivers in the cockpit. The XM data service is extremely popular because the pilot does not have to rely on the aircraft's radar for information. However, some data relating to cloud coverage and lightning may take 5-15 minutes to be transmitted. XM also has traffic channels covering most of the major metropolitan areas in America. These channels just play local weather and detailed data about the flow traffic only.
