Thanks to the recent flooding in Illinois and Indiana our 2004 Pontiac was declared dead by the insurance. So now we have to buy a new car. After dealing with the Pontiac Grand Am and its poor mileage and repairs every six months or so we are ready to go Foreign. Although I have done research on several vehicles online and in various consumer magazines I still would rather hear the opinion of those who actually depend on the cars. So we basically have two questions:

1. What foreign car would you recommend to us? or discourage us from buying?
and
2. Although not foreign, we also like the Ford Focus (It is the only domestic car we are considering). Does anyone recommend this vehicle or discourage the purchase of it?

Please keep in mind when answering the question that we are looking to spend no more than ,000. We would prefer new, but are open to used. Mileage is important, but we do not want a hybrid since their batteries are ridiciously priced. We want a coupes or a sedan, but definately no hatchbacks. Also we do not want features such as Satellite radio or spoilers (or any racing accessories as those just make us targets to the police). We basically just want air conditioning, cigarette lighter (to plug in our phone chargers) and an MP3/IPod jack or adapter. Also we already own a Scion TC and do not want another one. I know this is really specific, but I really hope you all can help us make a better choice this time around than we did three years ago when buying the Pontiac Grand Am.

Second question (if you can answer it): I have heard about this but I am not sure. I heard that ham radios can use satellites to relay signals and even have the ability to relay TV signals through satellites? Is this true? If so that is quite impressive!

I have a Direct TV single feed coming into my house to a receiver. But I have two authorized, working DirecTV receivers of which I pay. I want to split the feed into a splitter or switch to control both these boxes separately to two separate TV's from one DirecTV feed. I was told this is possible. So my question is, what switch or splitter must I buy? I tried a regular 3 to 1 splitter and it didn't work. So I think I have to get a special Satellite switch of some sort? Can I buy it Radio Shack? If I can, can someone specifically tell me what it is or better yet link me to it. Please let me know. Thank you.
